The Cell C Sharks began their 2020 Super Rugby campaign against the Vodacom Bulls at home for the first time since 2015 and scored their first win in ten games against the Vodacom Bulls with 23-15. An error-ridden game that should not be remembered apart from the final try scored by future superstar Sanele Nohamba in the last minute of the game.
The first twenty minutes of the game teams were content to play a kicking game hoping to force errors on which they can attack. Nothing much came from these tactics with both teams happy to convert the resulting penalties. The first twenty minutes the Sharks enjoyed territorial advantage and led 6-3 on the score-board.
The first half ended with a knock-on by Ox Nche, which reflects the quality of the play in the first half. The Vodacom Bulls lead at the break with 9-6 after a penalty and a drop goal by Morné Steyn in the second twenty minutes. At this stage, an error-ridden match being played at a snail pace full of errors.
The first 10 minutes of the second half was the most exciting of the match. A poor corner kick by Curwin Bosch, extremely poor defensive effort by Rosko Specman and some brilliance by Sbu Nkosi resulted in the first try of the match. Minutes later Morné Steyn kicked a great corner kick which was knocked on, the second time in two matches by Cornal Hendricks, with a tryline begging to be crossed. The rest of the third quarter was as error-ridden as the first 40 minutes with the Sharks ending the third quarter 16-12 in the lead.
And again the last twenty minutes highlights were the almost faultless kicking by Steyn and Bosch. However, individual brilliance by Sanele Nohamba who scored the Sharks' second try of the match gave the Sharks the win with 23-15 with one minute to go left on the clock. The conversion by Bosch denying the Bulls a bonus point from this match.
